Short description of the institution Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), as one of the higher education institutions which enjoy a long history and a world-renowned reputation in China, is a key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China and co-constructed by MOE and Shanghai Municipal Government. Through some 120 years' unremitting efforts, SJTU has become a comprehensive, research-oriented, and internationalized top university in China.

Fields of study

SJTU has 30 schools/departments in Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Students could take programs in different schools/departments, including China-UK Low Carbon College and SJTU-Paris Elite Institute of Technology.

[KIT has a separate exchange agreement with UM-SJTU Joint Institute. Students interested in UM-SJTU Joint Institute, please find that information separately in one of the tabs below and do not apply for SJTU, but through the specific UM-SJTU program.]

All university-level exchange students are allowed to choose any school, except for the programs below, which are not available to university-level exchange students:

  1. All courses from School of Medicine and Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance;
  2. All courses from School of Electronics, Information and Electrical Engineering (SEIEE);
  3. Graduate Programs offered by Antai College of Economics & Management;
  4. Undergraduate courses are not available for Graduate students;
  5. English-taught courses in the KoGuan Law School and School of International and Public Affairs are offered only for graduate exchange students;
  6. Please be noted that not all of the graduate courses are available to undergraduate exchange students.

Short description of the institution

Tongji University is a key research-intensive university in China and has a history dates back to 1907 when German doctor Erich Paulun established Tongji German Medical School in Shanghai. Currently the university with its two main campuses has grown into a comprehensive and internationally known university with ten major disciplines, i.e. sciences, engineering, medicine, humanities, law, economics, management, philosophy, arts and pedagogy.

Language requirements

English at least TOEFL ibt 72. The School of Economics and Management (SEM) requires min. TOEFL ibt 79. As of Sept 2024, Tongji continues to accept both the TOEFL Home Edition and TOEFL Essentials.

Some basic Chinese knowledge is advised, but not compulsory. 

Recommended Chinese proficiency for participation in Chinese taught courses:

  • For subjects of science, technology and engineering: HSK 4 (total score: 180 or above)
  • For subjects of architecture, medical science, economics and management: HSK 4 (total score: 200 or above)
  • For subjects of liberal arts and law: HSK 5 (total score: 180 or above)
Academic requirements 

Students applying for School of Economics and Management need a min. GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, corresponding to 3.75 of 5 in Tongji University.

Students who apply for Sino-German School for Graduate Studies (CDHK) need to have their Bachelor degree by the time of application at Tongji U.

Other requirements

Tongji University cannot accept applications from students with Chinese nationality, which also includes students from Taiwan, Hongkong and Macao. This also applies to students with two nationalities.

Courses

English taught courses: Tongji offers more and more courses in English and German every semester. Not all the colleges and all majors of Tongji University offer courses in English. For more information on courses in advance, please refer to the English course list or contact Ms. SHI Wenbin (Ms.), International Office Tongji University. As usual, this list of courses is for reference only, the actual course schedule will be determined before every semester begins.

Applicants interested in visiting courses taught in Chinese need a HSK certificate with band 5, with each subject scored over 60 points.

Applicants  interested in visiting courses taught in English need a proof of fluent English.

Mandarin proficiency is required for particular program such as Anthropology, Physical Education.

Academic requirements

Two completed years of study prior to commencing studies at the host institution.

Other requirements Tsinghua cannot accept applications from students with Chinese nationality.

Most of the courses are taught in Chinese, some departments also offer courses in English: School of Economics and Management, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering, School of Life Sciences, School of Journalism. Courses hosted by Academy of Arts and Design and Physical training courses are not open for exchange students.

Academic requiremements

Applicants should at least have one completed year of study prior to participation in the exchange, together with a transcript to prove.

GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale for both undergraduates and graduate applicants.
