Chilean-German Summer School on Power-to-X
The academic and industrial collaboration between Chile and Germany is strengthening through alliances, such as the Chile-Germany Academic Forum, which took place for the first time in 2023, as well as the IECO project and its summer school events, which concluded in 2024.
In addition to the various events and agreements between Chile and Germany the inaugural Summer School on POWER-to-X (PDF download) is currently being held in Punta Arenas, Chile, as part of the Ascendance Project. This event, dedicated to exploring green hydrogen and its derivatives, was officially launched on January 12th. During the opening ceremony, local authorities welcomed 19 PhD candidates and Postdoctoral researchers from KIT, alongside 17 PhD students and Postdocs from Chile.
The event has also brought together Principal Investigators from the University of Magallanes and the University of Chile, along with various Chilean and German experts from industry and governmental institutions, including Fraunhofer.
Participants are actively engaging in keynote presentations, research discussions, and interactive workshops to tackle the challenges and opportunities along the whole value chain of international Power-to-X projects within the context of the global energy transition. This collaboration between Chile and Germany has the potential to significantly unlock the potential of renewable energy resources and create sustainable solutions for future generations.
Over the next few days, attendees will explore the potential of green hydrogen and its derivatives—such as methanol, ammonia, and hydrocarbons—in advancing sustainable energy. A series of sessions and presentations will offer the participants diverse perspectives on utilising renewable energy-derived products to decarbonise sectors that are difficult to electrify globally. Additionally, attendees will learn about various successful case studies, and young scientists will engage in pitch presentations showcasing their work. The event will also offer participants the opportunity to take a field trip to observe the research conducted at the Haru Oni Plant firsthand.
At the end of the event on January 17th, researchers and participants, in general, will have the opportunity to discuss the various topics, case studies and ideas through their group presentations.
