By establishing the International Excellence Grants (IEG) with funds granted to the University of Excellence concept “The Research University in the Helmholtz Association I Living the Change,” the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) intends to
- to strengthen its renewal capability and top-level research,
- to expand its network to strengthen international recruiting, and
- to support strategic cooperation with international top-level universities and research institutions.

The “International Excellence Award of KIT” and the “Fellowship of SCHROFF Foundation” of 2024 goes to Dr. Chris Funk
During a ceremonial event on Monday, November 25, 2024, Vice President Prof. Dr. Thomas Hirth and Susanne Schroff, Chairwoman of the SCHROFF Foundation, presented this year’s “International Excellence Award of KIT” and the “Fellowship of SCHROFF Foundation” to Dr. Chris Funk, Director of the Climate Hazards Center (CHC) at the University of California, Santa Barbara. With these honors, KIT recognizes Dr. Funk’s outstanding interdisciplinary research on climate change, extreme weather, and food security, which has significant global impact. The “International Excellence Award of KIT” also includes an invitation for Dr. Funk to conduct research at KIT for up to six months. Further information can be found in the official press release.
